HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO... ME (5:30 AM EST)
I'm taking a break today to eat Mexican food (today is also Cinco De Mayo [day of the dead] in Mexico) and consume alcohol with some folks. Maybe I'll update later... If I can ;)

Two Blondes were walking down the street. One noticed a compact on the

mirror and said, "Hmmmmm, this person looks familiar."
The second Blonde said, "Let me look! The first Blonde handed her the
compact. The second Blonde looked in the mirror and said, You dumb ass,
it's me!"

big0nes Response To My Q3A Impressions
bigones over at MAHQ wrote a reply to my thoughts on the Q3A test, so I'll post the his opinions...

Disagree about the net code. Maybe just the server I was on but over a 250
ping and it sucked. Even at 200 ping the railgun was pretty much unusable
because of a 1-2 second delay combined with the high speed of the player
movements. Plus, seems to me with the increased player speed that LPB's have
more of an advantage over HPB's than in Q2. Just my take on it. I think they
will fix it, but right now it isnt great.

I agree about the whack-ass crosshair - it blows. Which is why I made my
own. It is available for DL at www.planetquake.com/mahq .

I also agree about the weapon balance. It will once again be a race to the
RL =).

I disagree about the camping to a degree. obvously on q3test2 there is no
place to camp =), but on the other map I think the layout in certain areas
does lend itself to camping. Plus, the see through teleporters make it a bit
easier too =).

Jump pads = rockage! They rule - a definite improvment.

Talk Bubbles = cool

Right now I do not like the light-speed movement of the players. It makes
the game more chaotic, and doesnt lend itself to skill IMO. Players move so
fast it is impossible to keep em in your crosshairs if they are half-good.
Ends up being just a run around and shoot and hope to get lucky. Especially
when you mix the lightening speeds in with the smoke trails from the Rockets
and all the other visual effects that in a close in battle make it hard to
see your opponent.

Just my 2 cents worth.

LINUX ADVENTURES...
Installed new KDE today, and couldn't get it to start, said a file '/opt/kde/bin/startkde' was missing.. Damn bastages... Luckily I backed all of mt stuff up into that other OS's partition.

Here's something VERY COOL about Linux and Quake games, linking files. For example, I have my Quake II installed in Winder$ in my e:\quake2, and in there are all those pak files, maps, skins etc. To play in Linux you'd think I'd need to copy all that stuf to my Linux partition, but there's an awesome alternative, linking it. Real simple, it's like making a Winder$ shortcut to the baseq2 in Winder$, and putting it in my Quake II dir in Linux. With this 'shortcut' Linux can access the pak files etc as if they were in the dir for real :) This aves over a gig of space and a lot of differing configs. Werd.

JOHN CARMACK'S FERRARIS (12:45 PM EST)
Rine stumbled across some interesting stuff while reading about his non-Quake love... cars. Seems this monthes Car And Driver has an article about a fellow who souped up two of FIVE of John Carmack's Ferraris. Man, I knew he made loot but......
Here's the pics courtesy of Rine.... (You can see John on the left in the first pic.)

BTW, Car And Driver shows the base prices of four of these cars... It is over $1,000,000 dollors...... Sigh...........

Q3A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (6:00 AM EST)
Reinstalled Mandrake with my Matrox G100/Voodoo^2 combo. Then played Q3A :) Here's my impressions:
- Net code is AWESOME. This demo plays better than Q2 did out of the box. I was pinging around 250-300 on  most servers, but could play with little or no trouble.
- The crosshair BLOWS. It's this big square, aiming the Rail is soooo hard with it.
- The Railgun is fun, but since the crosshair sucks and the trail is so transparant you can hardly see it, it's no fun to use.
- Weapon balance is more like Quake (1) in that the Rocket Launche was a dominent weapon, the Plasma Gun a close second. The Shotgun is TOO DAMN SLOW. I immediatly switched to another gun when I got it, the damn default Machine Gun is better.  Get the Triple-Damage and Plasma Gun and kill many people.
- The Gauntlet..... Come on, this sucks ass sooo bad. It's like the Daicraptana fist, worthless. At least the Axe and Chainsaw are fun to use,  this thing is an iron turd.
- The graphics are damn purty, had to trun them down from deault a bit. The fog and lighting are very nice.
- The Bouncepads are very cool. No more slow climbing those damn ladders which made you a easy target. Some are at angles so you fly across the screen :)
- Air control. Love it. Could get a little more, but I can live with it as is...  Pair with Bouncepads and rock on.
- Map design left me struggling to camp :)
- The Talk Bubbles/Lag  Bubbles are great. most of the folks I played respected them and ran past me, but some ASSHOLES did not... You know who you are....

All in all, I like it... And here's a screenshot or two...

LINUX (4:00 AM EST)
Reinstalling Mandrake 5.3 after frigging up my poor bash with a newer bash rpm... Sigh, no biggy, actually it's cool cause I can configure my LAN card and maybe reinstall the Voodoo^2 for Linux Q3A till my RH 6.0 gets here... Sooo... it's ok. :)
FADZ RIPPOFF SITE
Not sure if you noticed it, but the small child who had blatantly swiped 75% or more of Fadz's site layout, content, and everything else shut down his site. At least he was big enough to end the blasphemy. Kid, here's a couple points of advice, using 5 frames is cool, and having whacked content is cool, but when it so closely resembles another site (in all aspects) is is clearly a ripoff. You claim it was only the 5 frames bit, but when I was sent your url with no mention of Fadz, the first thing I thought was... "oh my God, this kid ripped off Fadz." Later I saw the bit on Fadz about your site.  When a reader with no predjudice at all hits a new site and immediatly thinks it is a ripoff, it's pretty certain there's some reason for it.. besides the amount of frames. Second point, impersonation is the best form of flattery, but on the net it's a ripoff, change the sites layout, but continue similar content, and who knows, Fadz might even host you himself.. :) Here's the kids url: http://poop.simplenet.com/
UNREAL PATCH
The fabled Unreal patch has finally been released if anyone cares.... If for some reason you do care, here's a link to the file and mirrors on Blue's: http://bluesnews.com/files/unreal/patches/UnrealPatch224v.shtml
Personally, I think it's Unreal how bad that game sucked. It was purty yes, and the AI might have been killer thanks to Steve (Reaperbot) Polge, but the weapons and netplay were SUCK. Don't matter how good the AI is if you have crap guns to use, or can't play online...  Maybe you can play online now... but those pee-shooters ain't worth usin...
LINUX SB LIVE! DRIVERS
Well, Creative got off their asses and finally made some sort of drivers for there mighty SB LIVE! for Linux. This is cool, maybe I'll buy one now... This also shows that the industry is starting to take more notice to Linux, and we can expect more hardware in the future to be Linux ready... Can you say Q3A?
GAME EXPLORER
If you're like me, you really don't want to give anymore money to Micro$haft or Game$py. The OS solution is easy... Linux, but what about the Game$py domination and greed? A solution: Game Explorer. It's a Game$py-like utility, with some killer features. Hit their site for more details. http://explorer.barrysworld.com/
