* Kingpin Console Toggle (4:10 PM, EST)
Given that the console can only be accessed by adding the 'set developer 1' line to your autoexec.cfg or batch file, many people are adding it and playing the game. Many are unaware that setting the developer mode to 1 will make the game skip cut scenes and act buggy. I have written a simple alias to toggle the developer mode off and on, so they can use the console when necessary, but keep it off when not needed (to see cut scenes).

----------------------- cut below line -----------------------

//** CONSOLE ('X' is any key you choose)
alias dev_t dev_0
alias dev_0 "developer 1;alias dev_t dev_1;echo Developer"
alias dev_1 "developer 0;alias dev_t dev_0;echo No Developer"
bind X "dev_t"

----------------------- cut above line -----------------------

* Creep Broke Beavis.... (1:15 PM, EST)
Well as you may have noticed the entire Nofadz.com domain was broke yesterday, which meant no updates for me.... And the culprit is: Creep. The evidence:

Exibit A
i'm trying to install GLIB 2.0.7 on beavis now...probably going to break it ;)

I'm drunk....drunk + linux admin = very dangerous

Exibit B
i JUST broke beavis BIG time

i knew i shouldn't fuck with the libs while it was online

Sorry folks, blame him ;)

* Unix Manual Archive
I've started a Unix Manual archive for all you folks interested in learning Unix/Linux. These are direct text file conversions of the actual manpages for many of the most used and important Unix commands. You can connect to any Unix box/ftp server and use many of these commands to navigate the system via Telnet/ssh/ftp. Learning these command is a major step toward mastering Unix. I'll also be uploading zipped and tar.gzipped versions for easy downloading. Unix Manual

* Battlezone 2 Screenshots
I got Battlezone in a bundle with my Voodoo^2 and installed it for kicks and was pleasantly surprised at how cool it was. The configuration was as nice as Quake II and the net play was great out of the box. Flying around the moon in a hovertank is very cool... ;)

* First 'Pefect' Pac-Man Game
Billy Mitchell, of Florida, was the first human to ever get a perfect score on Pac-Man, which meant he ate EVRYTHING (dots, powerups, ghosts, fruit) on all 256 boards on his first life to score the maximum possible score.. 3,333,360 points. WOW. This duide is insane...

* Anchient Lake Discovered
Ok, Blue posted this link, but this is very cool, scientists are going to research a lake covered by ice for 1,000,000's of years. We could learn so much from this like where we are from, how be evolved, what happened to the dinosaurs.. The list is endless. Check this out: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/national/990707/2577737.html

* Unreal Architects?
A architect in Dallas recently contacted Tim Sweeney (Unreal fella) about using the Unreal editor/engine to create 3D designs for walkthroughs of projects. This is very cool. Here's the email to Tim (From PlanetUnreal):

Tim,

I read your World Domination post today and thought you might be interested in some of the work we have been doing. Attached are some example screen shots. HKS is a relatively large architectural firm (~500) based in Dallas and have been thoroughly frustrated with the tools developed for the architectural community for real-time walkthroughs. After seeing my son play Quake II in January 1998, and going through three editors, I finally found one that allowed me to construct the building we currently are in before we occupied it. We were planning to pursue Quake further, but when Unreal shipped we tried UnrealEd and never looked back.

The attached images are examples of what we have done over the last year. My son is a double computer science and art major at the University of Texas at Dallas and helped us implement what we wanted to do by modifying the HUD, helping us learn about the editor and objects (yes, the elevators all work), and creating the beginning of the libraries we use. The figures you see in the attached shots either travel on paths with custom walk animations or talk using randomly called custom "fidgets".

We have this great 3D engine, why not use it for your architectural walkthrough?

In a word or two - BSP hell. Looking at the shots, you can imagine what e are up against when we have no control over the geometry we are asked to represent. A previous post seems to indicate that you feel that BSP has pretty well run its course. We would agree. On complex models we spend far too much time fussing with semi-solids and ordering to try to avoid holes. We would love an editor/engine combination that combines the features of Unreal but avoids the hall shooter baggage. Throw in a sun light source, and I am really happy. Regardless, our results to this point have been extremely successful and well received by our clients.

We run everything off straight retail Unreal disks and make no attempt to suppress the loading screens. We have no interest in commercial development, but clearly this is not just game technology. Anything we can do to help you enhance the editor/engine benefits us. Perhaps our samples may be of some use to you to convince others that this is a "serious" tool. Let us know if you are interested in seeing what we have done in more detail or if there is any way we can help drive development in a direction that will be more useful for our profession.

Dave

* Goodwill... And Telnet (6:50 PM, EST)
Today I got a late start, I went to Goodwill with Rine on a shopping extravaganza. I got lots of new duds.. I'm thrilled. Also while browsing this kickass site (see Link Of The Day) I acquired a killer Telnet/Terminal Emulator for Winder$ called Tera Term. It rocks, it allows me to have a Unix Terminal for Winder$ that I can send email, browse ftps and other 'fun' activities... There is also TTSSH which is a free SSH client for Windows, it's an extension DLL for Teraterm Pro. It also has a Linux version ;) Here they are for your downloading pleasure:
ttermp23.zip 921 KB
ttssh13.zip 244 KB
ssh-1_2_27_tar.gz 998 KB

Also, my freshly installed Winblow$ 98 has crashed many times today, so I just ERD'd it back to a more stable setup and hope it holds to finish this post. For those of you poor souls who also use Win98, ERU is a Godsend, it backs up all your crucial files into small packages you can save on disks or wherever. So if it starts to go crazy you can restore the system to s prior setup and try to discover which program Winblow$ is disagreeing with.... So in the kindness of my heart I'll post it here so you other poor suckers can keep this inferior OS coughing along a little longer... Here's what it backs up:

* MSDOS.SYS
* COMMAND.COM
* IO.SYS
* SYSTEM.DAT
* USER.DAT
* PROTOCOL.INI
* SYSTEM.INI
* WIN.INI
* AUTOEXEC.BAT
* CONFIG.SYS

ERU.zip 95 KB

BTW, News sucked today all around.... Can you tell?
