* W00T (12:35 PM, EST)
After a long day of Slackware fine tuning I now Have a stream-lined and sleek new kernel, with sound. Major thanks to Creep and Fraggy for their assistance in the process. The learning curve for Slack is more steep at first, but  in one day have lerned more than in weeks. I can now configure and compile my kernel, configure sound, mount and unmount all drives (including my second CDROM). I gotta say it was a good day... ;)

* Impersonation Is The Biggest Form Of Flattery...
Directly off Blue's:

Quake 2 Maps in Kingpin   [loonyboi-12:43 AM EDT] GameSages has posted details on how to use Quake 2 maps in Kingpin (thanks Billy "Not in the face! Not in the face!" Wilson). Here's the scoop:

Download a Quake II editor like quark or qped. Load it up and open the pak1.pak in your baseq2 directory. Open the maps folder and right click on the ones you want. Choose export file and save the bsp in you kingpin/main/maps folder.  If you don't have that folder make one, make sure you export the folder textures and place them in the kp texture directory.

And to think I did that monthes ago... ;)

* Kingpin For Linux!
Werd from Ridah:

A full Linux client port of Kingpin is now available.

I have not tested this extensively, so please don't treat this as a full-blown release. If there are major bugs, I'd like to hear about it. I will try and fix any problems in what little time I have outside normal work.

I am very much behind the linux cause. Although for many it can be a love-hate relationship at times, when it does work, it's a dream to use. I've only been using it now for about a week, in which time I've developed a strong desire to see this platform succeed. Thus, I have devoted a lot of
effort towards getting this client working.

At this time, it is limited to Linux glibc, and REQUIRES A 3D ACCELERATOR, which is compatible with Linux (most 3DFX and TNT/2 cards).

Please sure to read the README file before attempting to contact me.

Linux Kingpin v1.09beta - RPM Installation (recommended).
(use 'rpm -i --nodeps kingpin-1.09beta_glibc-1.i386.rpm' to install with TNT/2 cards)

Linux Kingpin v1.09beta - TAR Archive.

Note: some non-Linux browsers are known to corrupt downloads of these files. Best use your Linux browser, and do a shift-click.

Werd....

* BO2K CD's Infected...
This is sort of amusing, Cult of the Dead Cow, makers of BO2K had accidentally handed out copies infected with CIH. Seems some copies were burned on another machine that must have been infected, so those who got original CD's may have gotten more than just a hacking tool... ;) Kinda a cruel twist of fate eh? I'm 100% behind the hacking community, but I have to admit it's funny to see such a powerful group with pie in the face ;)  http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2294628,00.html

* Real-Time-Strategy Version To Role Playing Games?
Verdent, Everquest's makers and new home of Brian Hook (of id fame) are planning their next game, and the style is strategy. That's real nice, I love strategy, and Everquest looks great but I DON'T PAY TO PLAY. Perriod. I give a company $50 for their damn game, shell out $20 a month for ISP, I'll be damned if I'll shell out $10 more to play the damn game. Make them free an more folks will come... Look at Quake....

* New PCI64 Drivers For Win9x
I bought acquired Ensonique Audio PCI a while back, then thruogh drivers it bacme a SB PCI64, which was cool, but Half-Life had some problems if I enabled 3D sound. Now Creative has new drivers that fix that problem.. Yay.

* Latest drivers (v4.05)
* Sound Blaster PCI64 Mixer
* Creative Configurator
* Improves 8-Bit recording quality
* Improves DirectSound Capture support
* Fixes audio problems in popular games such as FIFA99, Red Line Racer, Half Life

Go get some:  http://www.soundblaster.com/registereddownload/files/sbpci/e64w9xup.exe

* Space Planes?
I read the headline and was immediatly reminded of Robotech's Veritech fighters which could fly in and out of the atmosphere. And now NASA and Boeing are making one that can leave earth and stay in orbit.

Airplanes and rockets that get the  X-designation are experimental, high-speed vehicles, but most of them are incapable of achieving orbits in outer space, re-entering Earth's atmosphere and autonomous landings.

Very cool.  http://www.cnn.com/TECH/space/9907/15/space.plane/

* Beta Test Gravis Joysticks
I used a joy/mouse combo for a while in QII, but broke the joy and moved back to kb/mouse/ I will say that playing with a joy is cool for FPS, you can actually push forward slightly to walk and all the way to run. Main woes are the lack of buttons to bind to :( Anyways if you like the joy or want to give them a try, get one free to beta test for Gravis.

* Winblows Critical Update.
This is all versions, 95, 98, NT and 200. Here's the kicker:

Windows® 98 and Windows® 2000 users:
Please start the Windows Update service from the link on your Start menu.

Windows® 95 and Windows NT® 4.0 users:
You will need to install Internet Explorer 5 in order to use Windows Update.

Must install IE5? I think not Bill. I have found that if you open Reget or Getright and click the link then the downloader will grab the link instead of allowing the stupid M$ crap to Borg control your computer. Anyways:

* 3D Explorer.....
The straight dope:

Introduction
3D Exploration is easy-to-use viewer for Windows 95, 98 and NT with Explorer-like interface and Open GL hardware accelerator support. It allows you to browse many popular 3D file formats - 3D Studio, LightWave, Caligari, Direct  X, AutoCAD and many other, plus common 2D file types. Click-to-zoom and Drag-zoom let you explore 3D objects instantly. You can use 3D Exploration to present a slide-show of an entire folder's images, either in a window or full screen for presentations. The program also keeps track of the images that you have viewed, and lets you select your recently viewed or favorite images. It is powerful 32-bit application, written totally in C++, and so very fast!

* #136 The Govermen's Saying 'In God We Trust.' Our Saying 'In id We Trust.'
New Q3Test this week.... Hooooboy.

* Link Of The Day
Save Me. A short while back Rine's car broke down, he *fixed* it and posted this. A few days later it died again, probably for good. A sad, sad day, Rine's penis was extended 3 inches (in his mind) by driving that car...

* My First Kernel Compile (12:50 PM, EST)
Hehehhe, I lost my virginity, and of course I got and error:

radio-cadet.o radio-cadet.c
radio-cadet.c:330: `VID_HARDWARE_CADET' undeclared here (not in a
function)
radio-cadet.c:330: initializer element for `cadet_radio.hardware' is not
constant
radio-cadet.c:358: warning: `cadet_probe' defined but not used
make[2]: *** [radio-cadet.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.6/drivers/char'
make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_char] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.6/drivers'
make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2

And sound still won't work, but all in all for the pain in the arse that Slack hsa been to setup I've already found that configuration and such are much more powerful than Redhat. And with rpm2tgz I can use them darm rpm packages that everyone seems to use..

* NEW Q3TEST THIS WEEK!!!
sCary has been to the top of the mountain, and although he did not see God necessarily, he did see the God's of id. And besides a glorious review: Q3Test Status Update2, he also had the word of the Gods, the new Q3test (including new map) will be out this week. Of course I work doubles on Sat and Sun and will have to battle to get it, but come hell or high water I will get it. Repent you sinners.

* GEEKS in SPACE AKA Slashdot Radio
As if being the masters of Linux/geek news in written form, Slashdot has now gone Audio (note, no sound in Slack...yet :( ). This is very cool, now you can listen to geek news while browsing elsewhere, discovered this practice from Rine..

* AMD Losing Money????
Wha??? They just put out the fastest chip oout there (K7) and they are losing money? Wake up idiots, Intel puts crap in your computer that tracks your browsing, and they are IMHO inferior gaming chips. Support AMD and buy a chip :)

* MP3 Ripoff
audiohighway.com apparantly had a patent pending on "portable devices that record and playback digital  audio files from the Internet," which means they will be forcing MP3 player manufacturers (Diamond etc) to pay them royalties for this patent. This is why I hate our system, some schmuch takes a piece cardboard box, says it's a "portable device that record and playback digital  audio files from the Internet," and make prices rise by charging real companies for making GOOD products. Watch for the Rio's price to spiral upward...

* #135 It's All About Power

* User Friendly T-Shirts(12:00 PM, EST)
Copyleft are now selling two nice UF T's, one of the Dust Puppy and one of Pitr saying "God. Root. What's the difference?" :)
http://copyleft.net/groups/user.html

* GNU For Windows!!!
While examining the fine T-shirts on Copyleft I came across this item:
GNU: GNU for Windows

Price: $35.00
Pages: 109

20% of the purchase price gets donated to the Free Software Foundation.

This book contains a CD-ROM that will make your MS-DOS/MS-WINDOWS system significantly more powerful. Whether you need a powerful text editor and programming environment (GNU Emacs), a file compression utility (Gzip), or the versatile GNU shell Bash, there is something for you on this disk. For developers, this CD contains DJGPP, the MS-DOS port of GCC, which is a C++ and ANSI C compiler with a POSIX-compliant C library. DJGPP supports a flat 32-bit address space with built-in virtual memory and more.

Bash makes DOS look like Win3.11 compared to Win98. Bash is so sleek and sexy...er.. Let's just say having a Bash shell in Winblows would reeally rule, and add Emacs and Gzip and C++ Compliers and I'm sold. I emailed for more information, and here was the reply:

> Ok, let me get this straight... This CD contains a working Bash shell? I
> can install exes and have Bash, Gzip, Emacs
> and C++ compilers? Am I reading this right?

you are.  its all the basic GNU utilities compiled for windows (perl also).

best,
neil blaney

* Unreal Super Metroid TC...
Saw this while looking for Unreal patches (yes I finally decided to play this game). there's not a ton of information, but you can see the early stages of a KILLER idea. http://www.planetunreal.com/smtc/

* Demise Patch 3
The super-duper OpenGL dungeon RPG has a new patch, a mere 20 MB and you're set... :)

Here we go! Public Patch 3 has now been released. Note that this version WILL DELETE ALL CHARACTERS. Sorry, but it was necessary for this version. I do not forsee any reason to delete characters in the future. I am also releasing a new full install version (Beta2) that has all of the Patch3 fixes in it. I should have that up shortly. Once I release the next patch (which will have MP fixes, and more) I will create another full install and a multi-file install as well.

This new version fixes LOTS of things, especially graphical bugs, including slow maze display, etc. With this new version, some people went from 5fps to 20fps.

Note that I haven't touched the MP code yet -- that's next on my list. Starting tomorrow, I will begin rewriting the MP code to solve all of the errors while playing a MP game (i.e. getting monsters from server, nasty lag). I'm also putting the finishing touches on some new monster treasure code which will address the current problem of monsters not giving stat items, and other cool things. http://www.vbdesigns.com/demise/news.shtml

* Donkey Kong 64 News/Shots

* Win Startup/Shutdown Logos R' Us
This site rocks. They have many killer startup/shutdown logos that are more than just pictures, they are animated, and there are hundreds of them. Also they have a utility to view the logo animations and one to make the animated logo a screensaver. This stuff is very cool, I downloaded like 50 of them :)   http://www.nucleus.com/~kmcmurdo/logos/

* Epitaph Records Puts Nail In SDMI's Coffin
Epitaph Records has signed deal with Emusic.com to sell songs and albums online, IN MP3 FORMAT.

The company will sell individual tracks for 99 cents each and full albums for $8.99. The Punk-O-Rama discs which each include 16-to-25 songs will retain their CD budget prices of $8.99 for the first disc and $4.98 each for the other three.

"You go where the customers are," Hoffman said. "And they're going to stay with MP3."
