* Carmack On Virtual
Machine
This
is very cool, now a mod can run on any OS without porting, so Linux folks
can play the RA3 beta the same time as Winder$ luzers ;)
The virtual machine interpreter is now completely functional, and cgame can switch between being loaded as a binary .dll or an interpreted .qvm at the change of a cvar.
The basic setup is that I have a modified version of the lcc compiler that generates assembly files that are processed by a new tool "q3asm" into a .qvm file that can be interpreted by q3. You can still use normal dll's for debugging, then release interpreted code. You can release a binary dll if you need some native system services (some networking stuff, for example) or are doing very compute intensive work, but I strongly encourage everyone to try to use the virtual machine.
The interpreted code has two prime benefits: portability and security.
User mods done with qvms will automatically work on mac, linux, and any other oddball ports that get released.
* XFree86 4.0
Beta
All
you bleeding-edge types who like to take the risk with beta schtuff can
go nuts over this, although it has limited drivers and no techy support
:) Check the XFree86 site for details/downloads: http://www.xfree86.org

Linux Tip
I
have been given instructions from many fine folks on kernel compiling,
and this is the final version as I do it:
# First
of course cp the linux-2.x.x.tzr.gz to /usr/src and extract it
tar zxvf linux-2.x.x.tzr.gz
#
Then you start the configuration
cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig
#
Or if you prefer make menuconfig, either way you do your configuring...
#
Now it's compilation time :)
make xconfig
make clean
make dep
#
This next one takes a bit, go wash dishes....
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
#
Copy your new kernel to it's home
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /vmlinuz
#
Restart lilo
lilo
#
Reboot (crossing fingers) and enjoy your new kernel :)

* Netscape Getting
A New Name
For
some stupid reaon they are changing Netscape's name (can you say stupid
AOL idea?) to iPlanet. This is sooo lame, a long history behind the name
and they decide to become a Neoplanet ripoff? Read about the stupidity...

* Open Music Format
Petition
Musicians
are banding together to battle the SDMI, and this is a good thing.
If SDMI goes into effect it spells doom for small no-label bands.
And with the realistic possibility of makinf the current SDMI layout more
restrictive in the future, the only way for musicians (and music) to be
free is to kill SDMI now. Read more: http://www.mp3.com/news/301.html
* Another Anti-Linux
Article
After
the slew of unresearched and totally ridiculous anti-Linux articles someone
finally got it straight. This fill-in the blank style article is amusing
in that it hits the mark pretty well for what a normal anti-Linux article
looks like. http://linuxtoday.com/stories/7964.html
* AOL Attacks
M$ Over Instant Messaging
After
M$ announced it's new instant messager (that allows you to message AOL
folks) AOL attacked M$ stating that Micro$hafts actions are 'akin to hacking'.
I can see this in that M$ is making a tool to 'hack' into AOL's private
service. Let the rumble begin :) http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2299359,00.html?chkpt=hpqs014
* Run Your Own
Quake II Server
PlanetChump
has something sort of interesting for once to post for once, this article
(now on part 2) explains first the hardware necessary to run a Quake II
server, then the setup routine for Win9x and Linux. This is good for new
server admins and plain folks alike, specially if you want to do like me
and make a dedicated LAN server for Quake II and other games. Now all I
need is bandwidth...

| THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1999 |
I'm hard pressed to say exactly what happened with beavis.bwave.com (aka nofadz.com) over the last couple of days. That is mostly because I don't know myself. I remote admin beavis from about 150 miles away. After my little fiasco and half-assed upgrading slackware, I did some brain surgery with a hatchet to get it back. I am not sure if that came back and bit me over the weekend, but for whatever reason it was locked beyond all recognition. I could gather no clues about why from the logs or the console, it was just a gonner.
To make a long story (involving lots and lots of driving) short, let me just say that we have a shiny new slackware 4.0 install on here, and everything seems to be back to normal (whatever that is ;) If you are a hosted member/site, and you run into things not working (cgi or password protected pages come to mind), please email me. Sorry for the disruption in service, and now back to our regularly scheduled program...
Anyhow all seems yo be back in order here, so back to the grind.
