• Subject: it was all right to dream Date: Wed, 06 Aug 1997 From: damon jonnier place: cat's cradle, chapel thrill, nc date: aug 5 1997 once again those weeners have left a crowd devastated by the high tides of the Poopship Destroyer. the cat's cradle is a pretty good place to see a show- not too big and not too small, maybe holds around 1000. i can't imagine ween playing anywhere larger, i think the HORDE section of the tour will be queer. anyway the opening band was lame once again; i think they were called the sand frisbees or something. i played pole position and moon patrol in the bar while they were on. i wish elektra would have shelled out for an opening band of ween's choosing for the tour. maybe some BS2000? Trans Am? or more Boredoms collaboration? that would have made for a much more interesting show. anyways, right around 11 the lights went down and the weenpeople hit the stage. the place was full of Heads who were mighty appreciative of the golden tones of What Deaner Was Talking About, which opened it all up. deaner and gener seemed to be in a decent mood, they said they were glad people finally showed up for their chapel hill show. they said they had played there 4 or 5 times before but nobody came then. this show was of course sold out. much of the show mimicked the charlestone show and others- Freedom of 76 and the Hindu intro to Finger were highlights, as was Richard Smoker which got the crowd moving. they played a stripped-down Buckingham Green after saying, "here's a little bit of english Rock." Awsum Sound was Fuckin Awsum. Deaner knows how to set the shit down baby! go deaner! She Wanted To Leave and Sketches of Winkle were other tasty treats of the first set; people kept on calling for more FREEBIRD or GNR, but our wishes were not granted this time around. the second set/encore section featured TAMMY following the general theme of Baby Bitch, which was a tender old nugget of weenocrity. Captain Fantasy stopped in for a moment, Big Jilm was wheelin and a dealin, and at one point gener stepped up to the mic acoustic and started ripping off an unbelievable OLD MAN (neil young for those who don't know). it was insanely on the mark, but poppa gene was afraid to sing the words. later when i was driving home, OLD MAN came on the radio and that made me wonder if there is some great celestial force out there or what. Anyway! buenos tardes amigo was enchanting and they even busted into some Roses Are Free, which was extra-sparkly for the chapel hill crowd. You Fucked Up-->Reprise closed the show at a rather early 1:30 (considering they rocked until 3 in charleston). gener came back out later and someone gave him a WEEN cape which he paraded around the stage. all in all a very brown and delicious show. all hail the almighty boognish! love, disco dan
