Tonight, ween were everything i had expected and more. after missing
them last time they were in town, on the 'Freedom'
Tour,(i was too young) there was no way i was going to pass up this
opportunity to experience live WEEN. And man, what an
experience. The Fauves, a Melbourne band opened the night, with a
medicore dose of rock/grunge. Mediocrity aside, the band
was also late, and ended up playing into WEEN's time. Now that sucked.
What was a thirty-two song playlist was cut down to
twenty- seven.
WEEN kicked off the night with a ripping 'Golden Eel' that blew my mind.
my first taste of live ween, and my body tingled.
They followed up with "What Deaner Was Talkin' About", one of my faves
from C&C. 'Piss Up a Rope' was next, and the
crowd loved every bar. 'Mr Richard Smoker' got an even bigger response:
these were the two songs that got the most airplay
here, and the country tour never made it here. The audience loved 'I'm
Waving My Dick In The Wind' a weensong thats ridin'
the airwaves at the moment. man, can those boys strum!
'Sketches of Winkle' was a pleasant surprise. I had not expected much
'pod' or 'god - ween - satan', but as it was, they played
some classics. Deaner called it 'cheap metal'. 'Tick' rocked in a
similar fashion, but 'awesome sound' was something else. the
beat was hypnotic, and the sound, truly awesome. this number seemed to
go on forever, with a couple of poignant pauses, and
piercingly beautiful solos by deaner. just when the crowd thought it was
over, they would burst into song again. i reckon only
the die-hard ween-fans fully appreciated the beauty of this song.
'Don't Get 2 close 2 my fantasy' went off, with all the other Guava shit
they played. 'The Stallion Pt.3' was mystical, and the
energetic bass line to 'Pumpin for the man' had the the crowd bopping
furiously. Gener lead 'Poopship Destroyer' later in the
night, distorted more than ever. i took a while to identify it. Hey, no
complaints; the sound was good.
I was stoked at the number of 'Choc 'n' Cheese' numbers ween played. The
bulk of the show was from this, my favorite of
albums. 'Spinal meningitis' & the 'Hiv Song' set the mood early in the
piece, and 'Voodoo lady' just rocked the house. It's
extended instrumental introduction was wicked, the song long and hard,
with a sick Deaner solo, and a little sharp-picking,
reggae-sounding instrumental reprise at the end.
Deaner announced that it was Gener's birthday, and they busted into
'Take Me Away' apparently for the first time live. But
Deaner followed that comment with 'we've never played before' so i don't
know if the first comment was more ass-talk. 'Baby
Bitch' was sung with great emotion, and was more powerful than on the
album. A beautiful song.
'Now I'm Freaking Out' was the ultimate for me. A B-side on the
'Freedom' EP, this is one of my all-time favorites. It was
awesome to see this live, although i did miss the drum machine patts. 'I
can't put my Finger On It' was enhanced by some
haunting Hindu chanting from Gener, with percussion from Claude.
'She Wanted To Leave' was accurately introduced by Dean as 'majestic
rock'. 'The Mollusk' was soothing, and Glenn's solo
was album-perfect. The Blarney Stone, an extended version, had the crowd
yelling along. Deaner freestyled a verse, with lyrics
like:
'i got haemoroids round my asshole
and my peepee is red'
and 'i got your mother on my cock'
When this epic was over, the band said goodbye, and left the stage. The
audience was left confused, as the roadies hit the
stage. They seemed to be re-assembling Claude's kit, and playing with
pedals and stuff. Much chanting/screaming for the return
of WEEN ensued. 'Ween is God' transmuted into 'Ween is Satan' then
'God-Ween-Satan'. Tho, that was mainly me, and this
other dude. Sure enough, Gener returned, to do a couple of solo numbers.
'Little Birdy' had undergone a major overhaul
musically, with a slower tempo, and a different vocal line. Gener
followed this up with a very mellow 'She Fucks Me' totally
unlike 'The Pod's version. Very smooth. The solo opportunity gave Gene a
chance to really showcase his vocal talent. After
ending with 'that's enough of that', Gener grabbed a drink, and the rest
of the guys returned. Deaner asked the people 'what do
you want us to play? let's have it. all of it.' Some guy yelled 'Big
Jilm' and even though my buddy had been crying for 'Freedom
Of '76' all night, they went with 'Big Jilm'. Sharp picking from the
boys gave Jilm an almost hawaiian sound, which i really got
into. Gene said they had time for one last song, and they busted into
the infamous LMLYP. This shit rocked for over twenty
minutes, with awesome solos from Dean, Dave on bass (he was really
getting in on the deaner face pulling act) Glenn on
keyboards (he'd ripped all night, especially on 'Mr Richard') and Claude
on drums. I love that drum-machine clap sound.
Claude is one mad drummer. The nose pickin' with his stick was funny.
The band said their goodbyes, and left the stage. But that didn't stop
little ol' Adelaide. The crowd cried for ween's return, and
after who knows how long, Gener returned, with an acoustic he plugged
into an amp. 'This is my baby' he said. the crowd went
mad. for an audience of about 200, we sure made a lot of noise. Gener
began strumming Buenos Tardes, and slowly, the band
returned- starting with Claude. This epic rocked on into the night, as
WEEN played half-an-hour overtime. When Gener hit the
bridge, Dave and Deaner, who had been facing the back of the stage,
turned around, and turned on the power. The sound was
huge. The only element absent was the flamenco-esque clapping, which a
small number of the audience attempted to create.
What a dynamite finale. Two epic ass-kickin' numbers to finish the best
gig ever.
When the lights came up, i went over to see the photographer, about
gettin' some photos. I got her name & number, then
dashed of to greet Deaner. I shook his hand and told him what a dude he
was. A swarm of people gravitated towards him (he
said he gimmee a photo opp later) so i went over and spoke to Claude. I
had him sign my country tour shirt (he was impressed
that i had one, considering the tour never came to Australia), and spoke
to him about his web-page n' stuff. Meantime, Deaner
had disappeared, and the crowd was starting to, so i asked Claude if i
could go backstage and meet the guys. he said it was
cool. alright. So off i went, with another guy, Daniel, to a tiny little
room where Gene, Dean, Glenn, Dave and some other dude
were chillin. they looked stuff. i told 'em how awesome they all were,
and grabbed some cool photos of the boys. i had Gene
& Dean sign my shirt, my 12GCG, C&C and Mollusk liners (in Gold texta)
chatted for a bit, then sadly, had to leave. It was
awesome to meet the guys. Claude, Gene and Dave are the friendliest.
Glenn seemed quiet, and Deaner just looked stuffed. He
stuggled to grip my shirt to sign it. they seemed impressed that i knew
the words to 'Now I'm Freakin' Out' (and all the others).
I was on the rail the whole night, about six feet away from Deaner, who
kept everyone entertained with his face- pulling and air
kicking. One cool thing was how the guys (dean & dave) stuck their lit
cigarette's in the heads of their guitars so it looked like
their guitar strings were smoking. yeah.
The whole ween live experience totally blew my mind. deaner's
brain-piercing solos, claude's power-drumming, dave's tight-as
bass, glenn's dancin' fingers and gener's mellow tones. yes, Ween are
the master-music-makers. May they bask in Boognish's
glory to the end of time.
