Subject: Tramps 1/16 Review- from a sobber mind
From: Matt Kelly ( yugo@mindspring.com )
It was a cold brisk night, and I was 5th in line at Tramps. My birthday
only a few short days away, I had precious little time to get arrested and
still be tried as a minor, so I was spending my last remaining moments in style.
I was a Ween virgin. And what a show to pop the cherry. I've been
listening to the bros. for the past year and a half, and I feel I have a
real understanding of where they're coming from....but enough about me.
After talking to some of the people in line (from somewhere in new york..had
a funky lil' band called Rotten Chemicals), my buddies and me walzted into
the club (sorta a bar I guess..more of a drinking hall) and securerd our
front row spots, while trusty Brendan went to check our coats. While we
were waiting for the suprise opening act, I bought myself a Mollusk World
Tour shirt and tested my crappy disposible camera on the empty stage.
The opening act was some funky guys called "chocolate genius". They kicked
ass- plugged ween a few times and had this guy in their band my friend
Fragile Mike assured me he saw in guitar world. We could see Deaner and
briefly Gener enjoying the show from the wings. I'll have to check them out
sometime. Also, the lead singer had a cool replica of the belt buckle from
the cover of C&C...pretty rad. They were kinda mellow, which was good, b/c
my dad was there and I felt they eased him into the night.
Then after a minimal instrument change, claude came out. I told him to
smile, and he stood there while I got his picture by the drums. Then he
left. We waited about another few mins, and then the show started up. The
bros. came out with big grins on their faces and barefoot (it seemed to fit
the mood). They commented on their smoke machine and opened with Buckingham
Greene. It was pretty damn sweet, and then they went into What Deaner was
talking about. I can't remember the order, but some of the other songs were
(and I know there were others):
Baby Bitch - that caught me off guard
Ocean Man - with gener an madolin dedicated to his step dad
Blarney Stone - kept teasing us before with the accordian; pretty damn cool
Freedom of '76 - great; chocolate genius kept quoting it before..don't know
why though
Mollusk - nice, and sweet sounding
Voodoo Lady - the only one I didn't enjoy that much...but my brother liked it
Can't put my finger on it + intro - stunning into...great to hear it live
finally
Pony - pretty spiff; Dean mentioned at the end, "that poor pretty little pony.."
A tear for Eddie - majorly intense. the whole club was sucked in by this one
Frank - by brother kept calling for this one
King Cole - I wasn't really too familar with it..but seemed neat
Hot for Teacher (van halen?) - Fragile Mike laughed endlessly about that
Mr. Richard Smoker - slightly edited (see below)
ended with long Shockadelica/LMLYP and finally Buenos Tardes Amigo
Somewhere along the line, they mentioned their families were there, pointing
to the people in the VIP section (all at tables, few people in their
mid-fifties). I thought they'd do a cleaner show (as I found with Richard
Smoker), cause I saw lots of little kids, but they did do a full LMLYP, so I
guess I was wrong.
Overall a great time- I was front and center the whole time, and ended up
severly dehydrated (would've tried to get a beer, but there was no way I was
moving from the front)- and gener wished me a happy birthday too!
Also, hi to the girl taking pictures that Rob and I talked to and that guy
who was there the night before.
I'm Matt Kelly, and thats all.

btw- my dad _did_ have a good time
Subject: Review: Ween 1-16-98 @ Tramps NYC
From: "Denis Delgrosso Jr." ( denisdel@bestweb.net )
First let me thank (Matt Kelly [see above]) for metioning Rotten Chemicals
in his review. I am good friends with its members and occasionally get to jam
out with them. Now onto the review.
It was a cold Friday night in NYC, as I waited in line at Tramps my
adrenaline got pumping. My second Ween show and I knew that tonight they
would not disappoint. Being like 7th online I was able to get a perfect
front row spot. The electricity of the crowd was incredible. Finally after
what seemed like forever the special guest, Chocolate Genius took the stage
playing a decent set but I was here to see Ween I could have cared less who
opened. Finally Ween took the stage. The audience going crazy. Gene talked
a little to the audience and then it was time. What would they open with? I
was hoping for I'll be Your Johnny on the spot but instead recieved
Buckingham Green. It was incrediable. As Gener said that night, "its going
to be a Ween hits night" and it was. They played stuff I never thought that
they would have. Some of the most memorable songs included Pork Roll Egg
and Cheese, Arabian Jam into can't put my finger on it, Hot for teacher,
and Spinal Meningitis. However the last 45 minutes was the best. Starting
out with Ocean Man dedicated to Gene's step dad, they continued on with
Mr.Richard Smoker, Don't shit Where you eat, Baby Bitch, and In my opinion
the highlight, an incredible version of Big Jilm, followed by You fu**ed up
and fat lenny. As the show drew near to the end Ween knew what everyone
wanted to hear an LMLYP jam which they did incredibly. And finally as if
they were trying to bring the show to an emotional end, Buenos Tardes
during which I thought the audience was going to cry.
All in all this was one of the best shows. It blew away the show I saw on
the 12 gcg tour.It left me hoping to see Ween again REAL soon.

When I heard that ween was going to be playing NYC again I couldn't
believe it...This summer when I saw them they were great..and that was one of
their first shows from the mollusk tour...That show was very good...but what
made it better was that they weren't that tight so there were some funny
little mistakes and such (mostly Deaner).
I just wanted to see the fuck'in stallion man...On Thursday night
(1/15)..we got there a little late so we missed the opening group....Ween
was just taking the stage...and proceeded to rock the capacity crowd's
collective world...We heard Voodoo Lady..Spinal Men...Buckingham
Green...Piss up a Rope.. Puerto Rican Power..and that eerie religious
middle eastern song while Geener wore a towel on his head...The special
effects were pretty tight...The smoke machine was "in effect"..all in all
a pretty cool show..(Blarney Stone Rocked)..(but doesn't it always?)
Friday Night proved to be even better...We got to see the opening band
featuring Vernon Reed (Living Color) on the guitar..he's always been a
very fast and technical guitar player although the crowd didn't seem to care
much for his group..I think they new that they were about to see a very
"kick ass" show. The started off with Buckingham green..If my unreliable
memory serves me well....It seems they left out..Puerto Rican power..and
Piss up a rope this night but added some real winners.....(unless i
blacked out during those songs)...They did play Pork roll egg and cheese...
moving away...baby bitch...a very emotional and moving tear for Eddie (nice
solo Deaner)...Geener had to recover....Dr. Rock...Sketches of Winkle...One
of the nights highlights was Hot for teacher...sounded great...This show
overall seemed like they new it was Friday night and wanted to go all
out..they did!!!
All Praise The Boognish,
A.J.O'T.
