• Subject: Roxy Ballroom 1/31/98 From: Jason Soares ( suarez@mindless.com ) I just saw WEEN perform in Boston over the weekend and couldn't be happier with the show. It cost a measly $14.50 and the entertainment value was unsurpassed in modern times. The band played for 2-1/2 hours, featuring material from all their albums. Dean was phenomenal on guitar and Gene sang like a very big canary the whole time. Mean came out for a nice sing along, and left shortly thereafter. My friend and I had a blast and will definitely see the Ween brothers the next time they come around. LMLYP was a good encore and ended up being quite a funky little jam. Overall, the show was entertaining, both comically and musically. thanks Jason Soares New Haven
  • Subject: review of ween in boston 1-31-98 From: "Eric A. Epps" ( eepps@smcvt.edu ) Ween took the stage around 6:40 (the tickets said 6:00-9:00). They seemed genuinely psyched about being at the Roxy as opposed to the other venues they played in Massachusetts on past tours. Deaner said something like, "We used to play at the Middle Eastern Resturaunt (The MiddleEast is a club they played on the country tour)." After informing the audience that they had only eaten Dunkin' Donuts and whiskey all day, they kicked things off with "Dancing in the Show". There were a few technical difficulites (feedback and monitor stuff) which prompted Gener to assure us after just about everyone of the first 5 or so songs "We're getting there Boston town, were getting our shit together." Deaner let us know that the Poopship has definately landed in Boston and then played pretty rad versions of "Don't Get Too Close to my Fantasy" and "Poopship Destroyer". The show went relatively smoothly after that. Claude agreed to do "Hot For Teacher" one more time since it was the last show of the tour and he did an incredible David Lee Roth vocal impersonation while still keeping the beat. For "Blarney Stone" Mean Ween came out on stage to sing along on the chorus and Deaner did an extra verse that took him about five minutes to find the lyric sheet in his pocket. "Blarney Stone" won the audience over, more so than probably any song on the set, and Deaner just added fuel to the fire by rhyming the word "ass" with itself in the brilliant extra verse (something like: your mom's on my cock/ iv'e got worms in my ass/my pee is red/and ive got zits on my ass). Ween came back for encores and announced that they only had ten minutes left because the club was turning back into a disco at 10. Then the proceded to stretch "You Fucked Up" and "LMLYP" into a 35-40 minute encore, that no doubt got the folks at the Roxy a bit angry. While continuing the neverending LMLYP jam Claude knocked over a tom which Deaner impaled with his guitar. Then they pretty much destroyed their entire set, while the "Dancing in the Show Reprise" played in the background. They all came out again and took a group bow, announced several times how drunk they were going to get, and asked that any audience members with drugs to meet them promptly backstage. This is the entire set, but I have the order pretty mixed up.
