The 12 Golden Country Greats Tour, featuring Bobby Ogdin and the Shit Creek Boys, Fall 1996

NOTE: THIS IS THE TEXT ONLY VERSION
  • Subject: WEEN kicked my ACE live 10/4 Date: 5 Oct 1996 21:43:17 GMT opening show of the tour was the bomb - since it's the country tour they decided to kick it off in Nashville -thank goodness they've never been here before. They played every song on the country album except fluffy. They also played Dr. Rock, swing my dick in the air,Big Jilm,Poop Ship Destroyer,Push th' Little daisies,Freedom of '76,spinal meningitis, can't put my finger on it,Mr. will you please help my pony, Is this what Deaner was talking about and improved a couple jams. They were absolutely AWESOME - possibly one of the best shows I have ever witnessed. I met the guys after the show before the got on the bus. They posed for pics w/ everyone asking, signed all autographs, and talked w/ everyone. I talked to Gener about the misspelling of Tennessee on the album credits-which surprisingly was news to him, about the Beck "Loser" cover - he said it was very good but couldn't do it live w/ out Andrew Weiss, he also said they would be playing w/ Beck in San Diego. Deaner said the new album would be out in Jan. I also turned 21 when I was talking to them 12:01am and they thought it was the bomb, Gener gave me a two shot bottle of Jack Daniels and I took a small hit out of it-then Deaner handed me his Bud and told me to take a sip and said"that Jack is awful". I then got them to sign the back of my ID and Gener wrote 21!under his name I also got them to sign my pod and pure guava cd covers as well as my t-shirt. They were the BOMB!!! Subject: atlanta 12gcg concert saturday, october fifth '96 From: AtomicMoog@aol.com my god i always knew that ween was my favorite band since i first started listening to them but how could i possibly have prepared myself for what laid before me at the "Masquerade" ballroom that night i took a hour long hell ride up to atlanta crammed in a car with 6 of my friends, my mom and my step dad (none of my friends drove yet and we were practically sitting on each others laps with the 6 of us in the back) by the time we got there we had huge sweat stains from being in the stuffy car and we all had leg and back cramps but MY GOD was it worth it? hell yeah that concert rocked it to russia!!! the crowd roared like a lion in a cage!!! (if youre a wesley willis fan you might catch some familiar phrases) but who cares this is about WEEN before the concert my friends and i met some people and started hacking with them and then gene walked by towards the bus ... everyone around just stopped and stared as he passed now thats power ive been lead by others opinions on the band to think that the few people who have heard of ween have a choice of either totally worshiping them or totally hating them (for no damn good reason at all i might add) we sat up against the stage for another hour or so to make sure we got a good spot, and it was worth it... i shook genes hand as he was singing "Mr. Richard Smoker" when gene and dean came out everyone went ballistic i crowd surfed once and my head fell on a loose nail in the floor ... i didnt do it again for the rest of the night i swear you could have gotten high from secondhand marijuana smoke (that is if you werent already lost in the music) hee hee... i was licking the sun all night mang :) when they played "Dr. Rock" the front of the wobbling floor was so crowded that you couldnt move at all you just kind of swayed with the crowd they just jammed for a while before playing "Spinal Menengitis" i was shocked at how much better that song is live the same story goes for "VooDoo Lady" and "I Cant Put My Finger On It" i get sick of people who say that they hate WEEN WEEN is proboably the most friendly and charming band to ever put out an album all they want to do is make people happy with their music and thats exactly what they do for anyone who can recognise good music even with the gash on the back of my head from the loose nail (not to mention the long lasting back and neck pains from the fall) and the busted lip that i got from some crazy dood who spazzed when he thought i was looking at his girlfriend that was definately the best concert i ever went to in my life and proboably ever will well, maybe not... i heard from a friend today that they were coming on their mollusks tour this summer ROCK ON!!!!!
  • Subject: Ween, NYC Date: Mon, 28 Oct 1996 20:21:04 -0500 The boys, naturally, were outstanding. You poor saps who missed this tour should kick yourselves...hard. Highlights: Gene & Dean alone doing Birthday Boy, unbelievable Buenos Tardes (it is 100x better live), a kick-ass Dr. Rock, and Fluffy (ending the show) is so great live, you don't want it to end. And it seemed like it never would. After Gene was done singing, he said thank-you New York and left the stage, but the Shit Creek boys and Deaner just kept going and going. Finally Gener comes back on stage, announces the Yankees have just won the World Series (Deaner wore a Yankee cap all night, Claude couldn't fit his over his dreads but had it perched on his kit) and the whole band departed. The only lowlight: because they do 2 shows a night at Tramps (same thing back in July) they didn't play nearly as long as they have at other stops along this tour. Only about 90 minutes. Loved it anyhow!
  • Subject: Ween, live 10-6-96, New Orleans Date: 7 Oct 1996 19:59:52 GMT I'm not familiar with the country album, so I don't know all the songs they played from it, but I think it may have been all of them. Here are the songs they played, that I know the names of (not in order): Don't Shit Where You Eat Scrape the Mucus off my Brain Piss Up a Rope Mr. Richard Smoker Booze me up and get me high Waving my dick in the wind The Stallion pt. 3 Dr. Rock Push th Lil Daisies Poopship Destroyer Spinal Meningitis Freedom of '76 I Can't Put My Finger on It Mister Would You Please Help my Pony I Saw Gener Cryin' in His Sleep Buenos Tardes, Amigo Big Jilm Baby Bitch Fluffy They opened with "Don't Shit Where You Eat" and closed with "Fluffy". I thought that the way they did both "I Can't Put My Finger on It" and "Buenos Tardes, Amigo" was actually better than the album versions. They also did some incredibly odd thing with violin and bass and Gene doing weird Indian-like chants with a heavy echo effect. The piano, violin, and bend-thing really added a lot to some of the songs. Poopship Destroyer was played live, not from tape. The whole band seemed to be enjoying themselves, even though Gene kept commenting about how sick he had gotten from eating some chicken casserole. It was a great show, and well worth it even if you don't like country.
  • Subject: Setlist SantaMonica 10/11/96 Date: Sat, 12 Oct 1996 18:51:30 GMT this is the set list for the Santa Monica Show last night, where WEEN opened for Beck... it was kinda lame cause they only got to play for around 40 mins.. and everywhere else on the tour they are headlining and playing 2 hour shows.. anyways here is the set... Pretty Girl, Piss Up A Rope, Mr. Richard Smoker, Japanese Cowboy, Wavin' My Dick In The Wind, ?, What Deaner Was Talking About, Spinal Meningitis, I Can't Put My Finger On It, I Saw Gener Crying In His Sleep, Doctor Rock, Freedom of '76, Poopship Destroyer pretty good set.. this list is taken from the actual set list that was given to me by Stu the steel guitar player in the band. the ? is because i could swear that they played another tune here.. i think it might have been Birthday Boy... but i could be just fucked up.. the set was REALLY fun.. except for it being really short... high points were Dr. Rock.. and the fukin' heaviest monster visit from the Poopship that i think i will ever witness.. talked to both of the boogness boys after the show .. they say that there is a new full length LP coming in Feburary!!! hold on here we go again!!! 10/12/97 ---San Francisco, the Fillmore, mang! sierrarealtors (sierra@GOLDRUSH.COM) WROTE: The boys rocked that night, the crowd sucked. They played the usual stuff. I was standing right next to a gang in front yelling "Gene, dude! SERPENT!! Whats your serpent name??""" They were also screaming for lmlyp through the whole thing, and Gener made one of his retard faces and made them feel retarded. Dean got so pissed at the crowd that he ripped all his guitar strings out one by one and started swinging the michrophone all over and throwing stuff. I got to meet them... gener's the nicest guy... got a hug... deaners a little out there... he's always in a hurry to go nowhere. Cool show, best night of my life!
  • Subject: Portland show! Yeah! Date: 16 Oct 1996 20:12:06 GMT I went to the Portland show on the 13th, and it was great! They mostly did 12 Country stuff, but they did Push the Little Dasies, and She Fucks Me, as well as two from their new album (which sounded "ok"). BUT! After the show, I got to fucking meet, say hi, and generally rub up against Gener and Deaner. I had no idea they were both shorter than me. They were very cool guys, completely normal. It wasn't until after the concert that I realized that these "otherwise normal" cats had created such mind-boinking songs as Awesome Sound, and Morning Glory.
  • Subject: Dean&Mean&Jean Seattle Show Date: 17 Oct 1996 07:32:31 GMT The Seattle Ween show was spectacular! We grabbed Dean on his way into the Showbox, he hung out with us in our VW bus for a while and we did some nitrous balloons together. Dean remembered us from the last show (even our dogs name!!! We partied with them in their tour bus that year for hours, shot some prime video, smoke machine and all) Anyway, chatted with him a bit, gassed him up and he went in and did the show. After the show we hung out with him backstage and then again outside in the bus (our vw) to do some more balloons and chat some more. Jean & some of the session guys joined for some nitrous. Was great fun hanging out with them before and after the show!!! Anyway the purpose of this post is to reveal some interesting tidbits Dean told us (while gassed out of his mind). He said this would be their last and only country album, (he said he was tired of being asked about why they did it in every town, so we didn't push it too hard) He made a joke about doing a solo middle eastern album next - It's funny the way the country guys were hired. Dean told us they looked them up in a big book from the Union, and they didn't know any of them. They just hired them to a job, and a good job they do! I intended to make this an interested message, but I'm too stoned to remember what else we talked about. hehe, I'll get back on again when I can remember.
  • Subject: Ween 10-19-96 From: mrpieplow@juno.com (Aaron F Pieplow) Only found the true Ween areas today. Forgive. Here is the review. I was there, it did happen. This is a fine Ween tribute. afk 1-8-98 Mr. Pieplow Ween, October Sixteenth, 1996. Lawrence Kansas. What can I say? Ween is the greatest. Each album is a masterpiece of pure style. I was pumpin' down the road from the Granada as a mechanic. Every day before the show I'd walk past on my lunch break, dreaming of the next week, when I would finally find Ween live. My quests had all failed before, usually because I can't seduce my way to a Ween show. This would be the ultimate gift. Anyway, the show sold out over a week ahead, so I scrambled for tickets. My mechanic roommate finally won some from the college radio station and we got primed. The show; The best I have ever seen, hands down. I've seen some dynamite acts, but Ween is the only one. Backed with a full country band, including Stu on keyboards, Poopship never sounded better. Gener seduced every woman in the place with "I Can't Put My Finger On It." Played Latin, a sensual Gener reached out and taunted those wishing to sample him. There was some assface next to me screaming something dumb, so I was distracted for much of the style. During "Piss Up A Rope," early on, I met some chick named Freedom. I thought she was hitting on me, but then she showed me her driver's license from Nebraska. Her name was Freedom and she was born in 1976. I thought this was a sign from the Oneness. She gave be bad things and I smoked them. The show, now already at legend status, only got better. They played almost everything. Everytime you thought they might be winding down, the old country guys would pass the JD and Gener and Deaner mastered more of the universe. It ended in madness on the second encore. Deaner was doing wicked air guitar and smacked Stu in the side of the head. It sucked. Deaner, naturally, felt bad and said. "Fuck it. I killed Stu, the show's over." And we all went home. Mr. Pieplow
  • Subject: Re: 10/19 show in Lawrence KS Date: Mon, 21 Oct 1996 23:33:34 +0000 Geeze, man I am so pissed I missed that show!!!! I had no idea it would sell out (I live 2 hours away from the Granada, so I haven't been to many shows there) When I did get to the Granada that day (Around 4 p.m.), I went inside to see if there was any way in hell I could get tickets. On my way out, I opened the door, and who did I open it for but the Gener himself, just walkin' in off the street! I finally realized this, and got my ass to believe it really was Gene, so I ran back inside. The guy at the desk said it really was Gene, but I couldn't go talk to him, cause he had gone backstage..... Oh, well..needless to say I cried my sorry ass to sleep Saturday as I heard the Radio Station announcer say it was "the best show he'd ever seen".. This is my first post to the newsgroup, so let me know if I've done something wrong..
  • Subject: Ween in Chicago Date: 25 Oct 1996 05:04:19 GMT I know it's a little late but I thought I'd let you all know what songs were played in Chicago. First of all, I didn't expect there to be a pit at this particular Ween show but there were about 8 or 9 of us that kept it going almost the whole show. Maybe we are just too hyper or something. And Gene said "Wow, there's even a pit!" Anyway....I don't know the order of the songs and I know I missed a few but here are the ones I can remember... Help Me Scrap the Mucus Off My Brain Piss Up A Rope Japanese Cowboy Freedom of '76 Baby Bitch Can't Put My Finger On It Waving My Dick In The WInd Stallion Part 2 Pumpin' 4 the Man Big Jilm Push th' Little Dasies Buenas Tardes Amigo Dr. Rock Poop Ship Fluffy You Were The Fool Spinal Meningitis Again...these are definately not in order and I might have missed a few but it was a great show. We tried to get them to play Reggaejunkiejew but Gener said "no way"

  • Subject: Ween in DC 10/28/96 From: Brian Galante ( BGALANTE@imaspub.com ) I was browsing the 12GCG reviews and noticed that one was never submitted for this show. This was a long time ago but I feel it's worth a shot to do this from memory so the show is at least documented. The 9:30 Club was probably a bit more than half full, which was kind of a bummer, but it's a big place and everyone there was a real fan (it was packed this year for The Mollusk tour). This was my first time seeing Ween since 1992, and I was very psyched to say the least. Opener Doo Rag was one of the most bizarre acts I've ever seen. Deaner could be seen watching from the platform above from time to time, shaking his head in fascinated disbelief. He had a wind-up panda and a drum machine for percussion, an out of tune, old time twang guitar and sang through a voice-distorted mask, giving off the sensation of singing through a nitrous mask at the dentist's office. It was hilarious at first but grew tiresome. Ween took the stage about 10:15 and just absolutely rocked. They seemed disappointed at the sparse crowd, with several comments throughout the show geared toward this. Gener said theat no one ever comes to see them there and Deaner commented that last time they played at the 9:30 Club, there were 20 people there because "Fugazi played across the street for fourteen cents." They were very drunk and cracked jokes all night. Deaner told the crowd that someone in Toronto told him "I love you guys; you were fucking hilarious in that Buddy Holly video." Gener told us that the Reggaejunkiejew was in jail in Miami, and they made VH-1 references all night ("I wrote this song while on the beach...). Gener also commented that "it's nice to be back in our hometown of Washington DC." The setlist was great. Japanese Cowboy featured a smoking closing jam, Spinal Meningitis was ten times as powerful as compared to the recorded version, and Poop Ship was probably the loudest, most powerful song I've ever seen a band perform live. I didn't even recognize it until the chorus. Before Help Me Scrape The Mucus, Gener introduced it as a "special Washington treat", featuring a gorgeous vocal harmony between the two brothers. He said this was probably the last time most of these country songs would be played live because this was the last night of the tour. The band was awesome. It totally exceeded my expectations. The steel guitarist, Stu, was hilariously drunk. He sang "The Blarney Stone" with Gener while slugging Jack. This was the highlight of the show. The other new song, "Waving My Dick In The Wind", was good, but at the time I was scared because it sounded very country. "The Blarney Stone" was introduced later as a new song, which put my worries to rest that the new album would be all-country as well. I love 12GCG, but one's enough, at least for now. The encores were beautifully selected. I was completely shocked to hear "She Fucks Me" and especially "Sorry Charlie". They didn't do any pre-Guava stuff during the regular set, so that may explain the obscure selections. Gener joked with the crowd when someone shouted out for "Dr. Fantasy." He said they were going to do "Captain Rock" later in the show. He also mentioned during the regular set at least twice that they should probably do "Voodoo Lady" or "Reggaejunkiejew." Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Here's the set list, as best as I remember it. Don't Shit Where You Eat Pretty Girl Piss Up A Rope Japanese Cowboy What Deaner Was Talking About Spinal Meningitis Pumpin' 4 The Man Mr. Richard Smoker I Can't Put My Finger On It Waving My Dick In THe Wind Push The Lil Daisies Big Jilm Help Me Scrape The Mucus Off My Brain HIV Song You Were The Fool Poop Ship Destroyer Blarney Stone Freedom of 76 encores: She Fucks Me Sorry Charlie Buenos Tardes Amigos Dr. Rock The order in the middle may be a bit off, but I know these were the songs played. If anyone has corrections, please correct away. Anyone got the tapes? BG
  • Subject: 9:30 Club Show in DC Date: Fri, 01 Nov 1996 01:07:29 GMT Looks like that's it...no more Ween for an indeterminate period of time. I made it to the 9:30 show, and thought I'd give everybody something to compare thier experiences to. Sounds to me like G & D didn't do a flat out carbon copy at each venue, which, considering the Shit Creek Boys' lack of Ween background, I kind of expected. However, I got up to Philly to see them also, and there were some clear differences. First off, the set list. I went to *great lengths* to ensure that this'd be right...belive it or not, I sat there with a pen and pad in hand. 1. Don't Shit Where You Eat 2. Pretty Girl 3. Piss Up A Rope 4. Japanese Cowboy (Gene came up with the idea of explaining the songs like "they do on VH1. He announced the following as "We wrote this when Dino was in the hospital with a bad case of the gout") 5. What Deaner Was Talkin' About 6. Pumpin' 4 the Man 7. Mr. Richard Smoker 8. Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down) 9. Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain 10. Waving My Dick in the Wind (announced as being off the forthcoming album) 11. Push th' Little Daisies (12. *would* have been Voodoo Lady, but Stu made a quick dash for the head. He's the shit!) 12. Big Jilm 13. The HIV Song 14. --Wild intro...sounds like the same thing they did *everywhere* as a lead in to:-- 15. I Can't Put My Finger On It 16. You Were the Fool 17. The Blarney Stone (also off their upcoming album... hope I spelled it right) 18. Poop Ship Destroyer 19. Freedom of '76 On to the Encore: 20. Sorry Charlie (Just D & G...band stayed off stage) 21. She Fucks Me 22. Buenos Tardes, Amigo (over 10 minutes...most of which was a massive jam session) 23. Dr. Rock It boiled down to over 3 hours of incredible music! I have to say, I much prefered this performance to the Philly one. One thing that ppl haven't taken into consideration is that Gene's folks were at the Philly show, and I think that changed the way the whole band acted. As for Doo Rag, I'm getting the overwhelming impression that he wasn't well received. I thought he kicked ass! A friend and I ran into him before the show, and he immediately asked if we had a "clapping monkey" or a camcorder. We offered to look around for the monkey (I'm no longer in the habit of carrying them with me...long torrid story), but had no luck. Did *anybody* get to see him with Chocolate Joe? As for Gene and Dean, they announced at the begining of the show that they "seem to end all our shows in DC...and nobody ever seems to show up." I think there might have been about 300 people there, and the friggin club holds over 700. Dean then said "We ended our Chocolate and Cheese tour here at the old 9:30 club...I think, like, 24 people were there." The Philly show had a few songs that weren't played at DC, but the same was the case the other way around. All in all, I have to say that the DC show was fantastic!! Met Gene after the show, and he told me that he was "disappointed" with the Philly crowd...much prefering the DC folks. Surprised the heck outta me! But then, for so few people, there was a lot of feedback from the audience. Anyway, I wish I'd had the opportunity to see that Piano Man cover, as well as some of the other shows. Anybody know what's up with Ween's board guy? I've heard rumors that he tapes every show, but have no idea how one would contact him if it's true. I've seen a *ton* of requests for live recordings, and thought this might help.
  • Subject: Ween in Philadelphia Date: 28 Oct 1996 15:26:17 GMT I saw Ween last night at the Troc in Philadelphia. I have seen them 4 times now, and this was by far the least favorite of all the times. (The favorite show was years and years ago when it was just the two of them.) Anyway, all the country got to me, and they didn't play enough of their older stuff, which, I think, is what keeps their fan base. All the little kiddies were singing along to the new country songs, which was kind of strange. I hope they leave the country people at home for the next tour. Don't get me wrong -- they put on a good show. I would see them again, but I didn't leave awe-struck like I have from the previous 3 concerts. The only big gleam of hope I got from last night's concert was that they played the Blarney Stone song, and it was announced that it was going to be on their next album. If all the songs on the new album are that cool, and they tour to support it, the Ween of old will be back. All in all, a good show. But about 3/4 of it was too much for me to handle. Maybe I just miss their old concerts.....

Fluffy It's been a couple years, as far as I can recall, since Ween has visited Toronto. During that time, they released their version of a country album, and they were back in town tonight to show it off. Dean and Gene Ween brought the Shit Creek Boys to play along with them, so there were eight musicians on the stage: three guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, a pianist, a fiddler and a steel guitarist. This allowed Ween to play most of their new album, and add a country twist to some of their older material. Although the entire band played on almost every track, I was surprised that the country band did not alter the feel of the some of the older tracks as much as I expected them to. Overall, the show was incredible. Ween played for about two and a half hours, and they played a bit of everything all night long, including a couple of new songs, and at least one cover. After starting out with the perennial show-opener, "Don't Shit Where You Eat", which is already pretty much a country song, they played several songs from the new album. The boys also introduced a new song, "Wavin' My Dick In The Wind", which will be on their next album, scheduled to come out in February 1997. Ween kept working their way through their massive vault of material, and near the end of the show, Gener and Bobby Ogdin, the pianist, got together to do their rendition of The Piano Man, and damn it sounded like just like Billy Joel (piano and voice!). They only got half-way through the song before Gener and the rest of the crowd couldn't control the laughter. Then they played "The Blarney Stone", introduced an a traditional Irish drinking song, and ended off with a long, extended version of "Fluffy". Scheduled openers, Doo Rag, couldn't make it over the border for one reason or another, but apparently there was another opening band in their place, which I missed due to the long line at the Phoenix because they insist on practically strip-searching you before you go in. Thankfully, once inside, there was no security to be seen, and the rest of the night went amazingly well.
  • Subject: Ween in Boston Date: 26 Oct 1996 04:49:37 -0400 it is now 2:45am in Newton Ma. and I just returned from a very cool ween show it was my first I bought a tee-shirt some girl was rubbing her butt against me most of the show and she was cool and the country guys were so very cool Stu and Bobby were the shit Bobby was wearing a shirt that said Goinfukennuts with two dots over each U he was the man it was at the middle east a pretty hip place across the street from my favorite cafe and doo rag the guy who opened was cool for about 10 minutes, then he got annoying a ten minute + version of fluffy was the last and best song Deaner really fucked it up the second best song was Can't Put My Finger On It which was opened with som e hebrew arabic style praying chanting and the song was sung in a middle eastern accent in honor of the club well I'm writing to say that it's worth 13 bucks to see ween and that everyone should do it also during fluffy the drummer hit the drum really hard and the drumstick went flying and guess who has it Me I'm feeling mighty good and also deaner's mom was there and she was pretty cool
